What's New for the 2004 Acura TL?
Moving a step upscale, the redesigned 2004 Acura TL gains performance and luxury while losing the somewhat vanilla sheetmetal wrapper of the previous model. Highlights include a 270-horsepower V6 engine driving the 17-inch front wheels, mated to either a six-speed manual or a SportShift sequential automatic transmission. The TL can accelerate to 60 mph in less than six seconds, according to Acura, while meeting more stringent emissions requirements than ever. As before, the Acura TL is fully loaded, with consumers choosing to equip one with their choice of transmission and navigation system. Standard equipment includes DVD Audio 5.1 surround sound with in-dash six-disc CD changer, HandsFreeLink wireless phone capability through Bluetooth technology, and XM satellite radio with free three-month subscription. Included with the six-speed manual transmission are Brembo brakes and a limited-slip differential, while all 2004 Acura TL models come equipped with stability control, brake assist, side curtain airbags and bi-Xenon headlights. An A-Spec performance kit can be installed by the dealer, including a lowered sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels with Yokohama performance tires, an underbody kit, a rear spoiler, larger brakes on models equipped with an automatic transmission and special badges.

Advantages of the 2004 Acura TL:

  • Impressive performance despite front-drive layout
  • Excellent quality of interior materials
  • Front seat comfort
  • Amazing level of standard equipment

Objections to the 2004 Acura TL:

  • Slightly tight rear seat legroom
  • Fussy gated sequential automatic shifter

Editor's Advice:
With performance, style and a full load of luxuries, the 2004 Acura TL is one of the most compelling entry-luxury sedans on the market today. Couple these benefits with a well-deserved reputation for reliability, and the TL should make your short list of $35,000 sedans to consider.
