What's New for the 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton? After a disappointing freshman sales year, the luxury Phaeton sedan receives a few changes that are not likely to greatly boost appeal among wealthy buyers. The Phaeton V8 model gets new standard 18-inch wheels (though the original 17-inch rims are a no-cost option), a standard 12-way power driver's seat, and can be decked out in optional Burr Walnut or Myrtle wood trim. Advanced front airbags are added to all Phaetons for 2005, and active cruise control will become standard in the middle of the model year. All models also receive a body color roof antenna and a new front grille. Limited production colors called Silver Atmosphere and Bolero Beige are also offered for 2005. Advantages of the 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton:
- A wealth of safety and luxury features
- Exceptionally refined and powerful drivetrain
- Beautiful interior detailing
Objections to the 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton: - A price tag unbecoming of a Volkswagen
- Anonymous exterior styling
Editor's Advice: Looking for a luxury vehicle but warded off by the burdensome cachet of owning a premium brand? Look no further than the 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton, which owes its basic underpinnings to the excellent Audi A8L. At one time the purveyor of humble rigs, Volkswagen presents this surprisingly capable attempt to raise the people's car brand to premium status. It also wants to corral young Volkswagen buyers who "graduate" into first-class cabins. If you can overlook the prominently displayed VW insignia, you'll find a lavish vehicle suffused with the latest luxury accoutrements, the finest materials and the most sophisticated safety technology.
