What's New for the 2006 Dodge Magnum? The big news is the introduction of the 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8, which comes with an impressive performance package including a 425-horsepower, 6.1-liter Hemi V8, upgraded wheels and tires, bigger brakes, and a sport-tuned suspension. All Dodge Magnums come with a standard tire pressure monitor, a cruise-on indicator in the gauge cluster, and an auxiliary audio jack for the stereo for 2006. The popular Magnum SXT gets last year's Performance Appearance package as standard equipment for 2006, and both the SXT and RT receive new satin silver interior trim. Silver Steel paint replaces Mineral Gray on the color chart this year. Advantages of the 2006 Dodge Magnum:
- Muscular 5.7-liter Hemi V8 in the RT model
- Ripped 6.1-liter Hemi V8 in the SRT-8 model
- Spacious cabin is nicely appointed
- Cargo convenience of a wagon
- Optional Boston Acoustics sound system
- Optional voice-operated, DVD-based navigation system
- Available all-wheel-drive
Objections to the 2006 Dodge Magnum: - Cargo space is on the small side
- Wimpy base 2.7-liter V6 engine
- Fuel-thirsty V8s
- Lifeless steering
- Handling needs improvement on all but the SRT-8
Editor's Advice: Though the base Magnum SE will get you the looks and good fuel economy, we'd opt for the adequately powerful Magnum SXT for daily driving chores or the Hemi-powered RT that provides buckets of thrills. If the RT's 340 horsepower aren't enough, we'd suggest you try the tire-scorching 425-horse Magnum SRT-8. Any 2005 Dodge Magnum can haul the family in comfort, and perform double duty on weekends carting supplies from the home improvement center. While it won't carry as much cargo as a midsize SUV, it's certainly distinctive in the sea of soccer mom sport 'utes, and sometimes form is far more important than function.
