What's New for the 2006 Subaru Outback?
Two new Subaru Outback models have been added for 2006. The Outback line adds a third six-cylinder wagon model, the Outback 3.0R, and the Outback 3.0R L.L.Bean Edition Sedan replaces the Outback 3.0R Sedan to join the Outback L.L.Bean Edition Wagon. The base 2.5 XT model has been discontinued (the 2.5 XT is still available in Limited trim). Other changes for the 2006 Subaru Outback include standard 17-inch wheels, a standard air filtration system, an engine immobilizer for 2.5i versions, and a newly optional DVD-based navigation system.

Advantages of the 2006 Subaru Outback:

  • Proven reliability
  • Powerful engines in the 2.5 XT Limited and 3.0 R
  • Just the thing for snowstorms and muddy trails
  • Sedan and wagon body styles offered

Objections to the 2006 Subaru Outback:

  • High price tags
  • Base four-cylinder engine is low on power
  • Cramped rear seating
  • Unimpressive fuel economy

Editor's Advice:
Subies are trusty steeds; nearly bulletproof when it comes to reliability, and able to manage all but the worst snowstorms. No Outback is suited to serious four wheeling, but all offer better-than-average ground clearance and added peace-of-mind when the weather turns foul. Outbacks equipped with the horizontally opposed "flat" six engine reward owners with power and luxury accoutrements in the cabin, while the XT Limited turbocharged model is genuine fun to drive. Indeed, the 2006 Subaru Outback is exactly what most people need when they set out to shop for an SUV. Alas, too few bother to investigate one of the original crossover vehicles, and it's one we highly recommend if you can live with the cramped rear seat.
