2005 Pontiac G6
2005 Pontiac G6

DETROIT, MI - The new 2005 Pontiac G6, more than any other vehicle in this General Motors division's stable, signifies what could be called "the new Pontiac." Heck, it heralds a new GM.

Witness its clean flanks, devoid of the gimcrack spoilers and ribbed cladding that made the brand's offerings cartoonish, like, yesterday. Pontiac designers have created a clean, sleek, upscale look for this new Grand Am replacement, and the effort bodes well for GM's excitement division. The 2005 Pontiac G6 will debut first as a sedan in SE or GT trim. Later in 2005, a high-performance GTP model will be added to the lineup, and future models include coupe and convertible variants.

Based on the long-wheelbase Epsilon platform that serves as the basis for the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx, the 2005 Pontiac G6 SE and GT will both get a 3.5-liter OHV V6 making 200 horsepower and featuring electronic throttle control. Endowed with a high-output, 3.9-liter V6 making 240 horsepower through variable valve timing, the G6 GTP arrives in the middle of the 2005 model year. For 2006, the standard motor in the SE model will be a 2.4-liter DOHC Ecotec four-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower. With curb weights starting around 3,400 pounds, this four banger might have its work cut out for it.

A four-speed automatic comes standard on SE and GT for 2005, featuring manually interactive shifting on the GT and driving the front wheels on both versions. The GTP will feature this transmission also, but will offer the option of a six-speed manual to delight true enthusiasts.
