Rockets to the moon, beat poetry, anti-war demonstrations, The Beatles, and the Ford GT40 all made headlines in 1969. And now, with the 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition, you can turn back the clock to Dearborn’s final Le Mans victory thanks to a special paint job that recalls the JW Automotive/American Gulf Oil-sponsored racing car.

Decorated in Heritage Blue paint with Epic Orange stripes, the 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition is sure to turn heads even more than a regular GT. It even has four white roundels in which the buyer can paint a favorite number. Otherwise, this special edition is identical to a stock Ford GT, which is built on an aluminum space-frame chassis with super-plastic-formed aluminum body panels and an aluminum-over-carbon engine cover. The supercharged 5.4-liter V8 is mounted behind the seats in a mid-ship configuration, making 550 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels, propelling the $150,000 super car to a top speed of 205 mph.

Because the Ford GT doesn’t meet federal regulations for the 2007 model year and beyond, this is the last year for the short-lived exotic, virtually guaranteeing its desirability for decades to come. Since this classic two-tone paint job is available only for 2006, this isn’t a bad way to make a rare automobile even more exclusive.

Just make sure to wear your Chuck Jordans, vintage jeans, and a faded Jimi Hendrix T-shirt when you take it for a spin.

About Christian Wardlaw
Christian Wardlaw joined Autobytel's Automotive Information Center (AIC) in January 2003, and current serves as Manager of Content Development for Autobytel. Previously, Christian spent eight years as Editor-in-Chief and Director of Automotive Data for Edmunds.com. A writer, editor, and automobile aficionado, Christian is a different sort of car enthusiast. His passion lies in the vehicles that people most often buy, rather than with high-performance sports cars or ultra-luxury sedans. “Given the choice to spend an hour with a Dodge Viper or a Honda Accord, I’ll choose the Accord,” he claims. Unless, of course, the driving venue is a racetrack. Christian has been a car enthusiast all of his life, uttering “car” as his first word while growing up in Detroit. A graduate of Western Michigan University, he holds a bachelor’s degree in English. His daily drivers include a 1994 Mazda Miata, a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata, and a 2005 Nissan Murano.
