Click to enlarge. 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class When the 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 debuts, it will contain a rack-and-pinion steering system that replaces the old recirculating-ball unit for more responsiveness. Also standard is a larger and more effective braking system, and a new multi-link four-wheel-independent suspension with available sport tuning.

Topping the range is the new 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG, a road-ripping sports car with a monster 360-horsepower 5.4-liter V8 engine that blasts the car from a standstill to 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds. It comes standard with the seven-speed automatic, steering wheel shift buttons and an AMG SpeedShift manual driving program. With AMG SpeedShift, the driver is in complete control of shift points, and the system includes a torque-converter lockup, active braking downshift and faster gear changes. The SLK 55 AMG's firmer suspension receives unique struts, dampers and anti-roll bars. Eighteen-inch wheels wearing performance tires are hauled to a halt by composite front disc brakes with six-piston calipers and solid rear disc brakes with four-piston pincers.

Styling modifications for the 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG include special AMG multi-spoke wheels, a body kit, longitudinal gills on the hood, twin exhaust outlets and smoked taillight lenses. Other modifications include chrome-ringed front fog lights, black painted grille elements and a subtle lip spoiler on the trunk lid that reduces lift by as much as 36 percent. Inside, the SLK 55 AMG receives Nappa leather appointments, AMG sports seats and an AMG steering wheel.
